I would like to add that other than burying their head into the sand I notice my bichir like to stand on their tail at a 70 degree angle from time to time. I have no idea how my del and polli managed to balance so well standing on their tail.

yea.
definitly normal.
i almost never see my bichirs go up for air.
but that may be due to the fact they still have external gills.
im pretty sure many species,especially the lower jaws,do this.
my endlis always try,but my gravel isnt deep at all.

Both my Del and Endlis do this. I think it is part of the ambush hunter thing.

Yeah thats what I have heard, They wait for the fish to come close then they strike....

Thanks, he's a little more then a year old. And he's about a foot long.
