I personally would never leave the wood in its natural state. I will always finish it when water is involved to where it is water proof. I have pond liner covered the tops of my plywood and have only the 2x6 pine exposed to getting wet, which it does because the fish dont seem to understand that splashing at me 10 times a day doesnt mean I will feed them.
Your critical failures? Anyone?
