Your dream filtration team for a 240!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If expenses are out the door, :) a Lifeguard Tarpon Model 40 fed by a Reeflo Hammerhead pump.

i personally would go with two Rena xp4's. each would be rated for approximately the tank size so you would end up with double the tank size for filtration, which is pretty much perfect IMO. the rena canisters don't take up a lot of space, and they are very simple to operate and maintain <- a very good idea if there were ever an instance where your parents would have to do tank maintenance in your absence (if you were really sick or away from home, etc).

i'm running an xp4 alongside an aquaclear on a bare bottom tank and the flow from the two filters keeps any gunk suspended perfectly for getting sucked back into the intakes.

I was in the same boat as you regarding filtration and went for 2 hard piped fx5s (aquarium delivery tomorrow so busy busy setting everything else up)

Will post some pics of the custom inlets and spraybar later tonight if I get them finished.

I have a 240 that I run 3X Magnum 350 canisters on. Has worked good for me so far. My "dream set up" Would be 2X FX5s... Maybe down the road a ways...

For OP- Stacking canisters is really not the way to go. The fx5 is a good filter but will only give you about 450 GPH flow. If you want to use a canister but want more then 1 ehiem or fx5 can handle then just use a bigger canister. The FX5 is really "entry level" and stacking them will just raise your energy bill. Plus if your looking for easy maintence the FX5 is not the way to go, especially 2.

Also you stated no bulkheads. Well bulkheads will make any system more energy effient and more GPH. So overflows and bulkhead are really the way to go esp with a "Dream System".
