Doesn't matter what you're mixing with what...... Somebody's had fish A kill fish B, someone else had fish B kill fish A. No one will ever agree, and you'll never understand the circumstances that led to what happened. All you can do is gather opinions, make a call, and deal with it. Have an extra tank ready so you're prepared for whatever may happen.
I too have lost a gar to a hungry ray. That ray is gone and the gar currently in my big tank is fine, like it has been with rays for years.
But then again you might wanna just straight toss my opinion out the window, cause I keep an MBU with rays, and an Aimara with rays, so clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about......
4 rays from 6 to 9 inch discs with a 18 to 20 in fl gar. I've never had an issue, my gar stays up at all times. In a 300 with a 2262 two fx5s and 2 cfs500s

I have always had a gar with my rays. I got rid of my last florida gar because it kept hanging out on the bottom and did what Keepin's did, bit a ray trying to get food off of the bottom. I currently have a gator gar with my bigger rays. They do not grow as fast as you would think. I got mine around 6" about a year ago and he is maybe 8 to 9" now. He seems to stay at the top more so than the florida gars do but this is only a one fish comparison.
rays will eat or "investigate" anything they can to see if its food.
if they are hungry and can catch a gar they will "investigate"
i have a gar with what i would call well fed rays and my gar occasionally turns up with red fins.
my rays have also attacked lots of other fish whilst ive had them including nearly killing a large vampire pleco as well as eating to death some other plecos and chasing some arros out of a tank with a lid and eating eels. rays are curious creatures and will investigate the things in their tank weather the recipients like it or not.
my gar still lives with my rays but my 2ft + fire eel bit the farm some time ago
I kept gar before rays... and my gar play fine with the retics.. i've heardof big rays eating gar... and big gar eating smaller rays... imo its a size issue, not just disposition.. my cuban gar was raised with my mellow floridas so he's pretty chill... but there as been some mild nipping from time to time ( I found feeding my gar from the surface then dropping the rays food in that sinks 10-15 mins later worked out the kinks for me) my gar have always been pretty relaxed, and my rays have always been well fed.
