I, too, had lots of problems with the Q1 9000. I had it (them) waranteed 4 or 5 times, I lost count. Every time, the pump was noisy, so I sent it back. After a bunch of times, I finally got the guy to admit that they were having lots of problems with the 9000's (all noisy). He upgraded me to the 14000, and it is almost silent. The only problem is that now it flows too much for my overflows, so I had to make a loop from the output of the pump back into the sump to relive some pressure. If I were you, I would call pentair and make a stink because it is a known problem.

Thanks very much for the tip off. I emailed their product support address, and the guy is shipping me a new pump, no questions asked - I even get to keep the original. I have to say product support like that is tough to beat!

I prefer the quiet ones. I think they are the most economical to run long term. The Q 14000 uses 270 watts and flows 3624 GPH at zero feet but has a max head of 34.5 feet.

The mag drive 36 takes 380 watts to do the same amount of work and maxes out at 24 feet of head. The Mag is cheaper initially but saving a couple pennies an hour over an entire year covers the cost.

In any case. A magnetic drive pump should last for years and years. The plastic impeller should need replacing before the drive actually goes bad.

If you like your fish room to sound like a factory, sure. I have two ViaAqua 4900s and you can't do the impeller mod to quiet them. They put out a lot of flow, but are really noisy.

As for the Q1 pumps - they are pricey from an LFS, but I got my 9000 off ebay for $60. It was a customer returned unit, never used, but the box was open. Now after emailing pentair about the noise, I will have 2 9000's for $60... one noisy, hopefully one quiet.

Pull out both magnetic shafts when you get it. If they are identical flip flop them. If it quiets the loud one then buy a new impeller and you will have two quiet 9000s.

good idear! I was thinking I'd just find another use for the noisy one... but a PAIR of quiet ones would be really nice. Might be entertaining to see what my overflow does with a pair of 9000's running in the sump!
