actually. rock systems to make caves (like with marine tanks) look awesome with african cichlids
 
i think for me it depends on the fish. If its a fish i want to show off like my channa auranti i'd have it in a bare bottom with little decor. If its a snakehead thats pretty common i'd have it in a natural setup
I'm with sqratch... it all depends on type of fish??... but generally, I usually like a blk. back/blk. bttm, natural dark/red substrate, and some driftwood centerpieces. Sometimes will floating plants, as well. :)
 
It definetly depends on the fish. However, natural seems better than bare bottom. My favorite tank (and I'll post pics when I get home) is a HUGE (8x4x2) planted tank housing a single AAA grade asian aro with a bunch of denisoni barbs. Amazing!
