Your technique to safely catch gar?

Catching to stock your tank that is. What techniques do y'all use to not injure the specimen? Nylon rope lure? Cast net?

I have a few locations in central Texas I know I can find long nose. Possibly shortnose and spotted as well.

Just trying to get some game plans ready for when I finish my new tank.

Rope on a jig head works well for catching them but it can me a pain to get the rope out of the teeth. I’d recommend bringing a cast net or a 6x6 dip net

Even throwing a minnow trap out for the night and checking it daily works well for juvies. That’s how I got my juvenile northern pike a few years ago

Thanks I plan on using the nylon lure. Maybe I'll bring some nice thick leather gloves. Ideally I'll be catching 12-24" fish for my 500g. Thanks for the reply.

I'd go with a cast net. Super effective method of catching a large selection of fish to choose from.
