You're kidding right??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nope, not kidding. One way to reduce aggression with cichlids is to overstock. Be done with both african and new world cichlids.

This is what people do with only africans to reduce aggression. It's normal. But you can't do that with centrals. It's different. But ya, he is a bit overstocked I think, he could loose a few.

Overstocking is only a temporary solution. I set up three tanks of African Cichlids following the overstocking advice from this and other forums and learned the hard way.

Everything is generally fine when the fish are small. However, as they grow things get ugly. You may be ok with 30 x 2-3" cichlids in a 75G to 150G tank if you do 50% WCs once or twice a week. However, when those 30 fish grow to 4-6", nitrates go through the roof.

You have no choice but to thin the herd as the bio-load gets way too excessive for an ordinary fish keeper to deal with. That then causes the more aggressive fish to start their own process of thinning the herb. Before you know it, you only have a few 6-8" fish left alive. You can forget about introducing more African Cichlids. The existing fish will kill them off within a day; even if you totally rearrange the tank.

I finally got rid of most all of my African Cichlids. I just could not enjoy watching a tank full of fish trying to kill each other. Instead of relaxing me, it elevated my blood pressure. However, I have kept a few of the more docile ones (Protomelas steveni, Placidochromis phenochilus, Fossocorochromis rostratus, Yellow Labs).

Actually it is done with Centrals quite often as well, more so in asian countries and it seems to work out quite well for them. I'm not saying it's right but.....

Looks like a fairly typical mbuna tank. It's a little on the heavy stocking side but if you have the filtration to handle it then it's fine.

How do you get them to sing like that?

All in all, those fish should be fine if he keeps up with water changes (easier said than done)
