Zebrina group on the way

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i wonder if unungy Imports can shed some light on their native habitat. I'm going to send him and Jeff a note. I'll keep everyone posted.

Who is the source. 1 thing I can say is that this section of mfk needs to tighten up and we need to stick together and put as much info on habitats breeding etc.... More people would be into these fish if there were tons of info to read like CA SA cichlids and other types of fish also George from shark aquarium doesn't think these came from ventuari. But he also said he wasn't sure. His supplier also sent them from bogata Columbia. So who really knows. Word is they could have came from Atabapo or ventuari.

I agree. I'm glad you are active again here. You and kostixx have lots of experience and you both haver tremendous knowledge. Crenicichla44 has been a constant source of info and a great resource to members who post with questions.

Peanut used to be very active but now that he's gone, let's all work to tighten it up.

Mike zebrowski. Only person I know of who's into pikes in Michigan lol. He's probably bred more pikes than other sp. I've bred. Right now he doesn't keep lugubris pikes anymore and is gonna start working on breeding Cr. inirida I if he finds a female. He seems very fond of saxatilis sp.

I agree it'd be nice to have more organized info. in the pike section and it might help increase interest in this amazing group of fish. There's been more interest in this section lately then there's been in awhile so this maybe a good time to start trying to creating some new stickies.

Some ideas for stickies I've been kicking around are vendor sources for pikes and seasonal availability as well as a detailed species sticky of some of the pikes we're familiar with. There's several species I'm searching for info. about for my personal interest and though it's been hard to find some of the info. I was pleasantly surprised to find some of it was pretty thorough that I maybe able to contribute.

For those of you who are interested in helping create these stickies you can help by gathering info. including links to the original info. as well as compiling your own personal experiences. If we're going to do it we'll do it right and give everyone who helps the credit they deserve including poster who may not be active here anymore or those form other sites. Right now there's a lot happening with the Mods though so if you are interested don't start compiling info. yet. Once everything is settled among the Mods we'll see about setting up a draft thread where links and personal experiences can be submitted to and then organized hopefully into a new fluid sticky.

Lastly thanks I want to thank you guys for the great info. you've already been putting out lately. You've been reviving this section all by yourselves and it's quite an accomplishment as I see others starting to garner interest in pikes due to your enthusiasm and knowledgeable posts.

Thanks brother , I was thinking about like a habitat sticky, where it shows the difference between white water, clear water, black water with rivers and collection points of certain species and ways we can replicate this in our tanks. Newcomers would love this type of info.

Glad to see you here kolt, I've been trying to get the pike section up and running again since the summer been trying to post a lot here...
Looks like it's working theres a few People here now who're pretty serious. I think we all need to keep up the updates on our fish etc so people can see how much fun they are to grow out and see how some develop I know I go to the Cichla section sometimes and scroll through cichla growout threads and see the color progression.

On the idea of certain stickies I personally think the vendor sources should not be a good idea to be a sticky because vendors come and go and choose not to import certain pikes unless requested due to lack of demand etc. I also think the seasonal availability sounds kinda fun but I hardly know them I'm only aware of that for several species and even then with the instability of many SA countries export laws can change in a blink of an eye. I think the species list is a good idea though and def should be made although there's too many species and not enough info IMO so we'll be needing to do some digging. Vinny kutty's site on oocities I think will be a major resource, reading that website back when I was in 6th grade was what got me hooked onto pikes...

Jeremy used to be here and logs on now and then but I think he uses Facebook now more. He also has a bonded pair of zebrina. Hasn't spawned them yet

Jeff responded to my question. He shared that the zebrina come from the Rio Casiquare Where Intermedia is found. He said it was a white water river. Looks like neutral water should be good to go.

No problem, sounds like a good idea to me, an interesting read and a way to generate traffic as these habitats also host other fish which may make Aro and CA/SA Cichlid keeprs peer in here and may get them hooked on pikes before they leave out. Here's a sample link of something we could use in that thread/ sticky http://rainforests.mongabay.com/0602.htm It describes the differences between white, clear and black water. The only things it's vague on is temp. and which is the most likely to be the fast moving water. However we can logically deduce with a decent degree of certainty from the article and the fact that when you go river rafting you go down "white water rapids" it's white water that tends to be the fastest flowing of the three. Still there's definitely better more in depth articles we could source, write them out for the layman and cite the source of said info.

Thanks Jacob all I can say is between you, caribemob and mrrobxc you've done a good job of generating interest IMO by keeping pike threads circulating in the public eye through informative posts so they have a chance to draw some attention as well as educate. I believe I see it too a few people starting to become interested in pikes. We may never have the numbers of some of the other sections but if we had a good core group IMO that's just as good as a large group as long as the dedication to providing info. is there.

I still like the Vendor sticky idea because we can keep it open to additions making it always relevant. Plus the very fact that only certain vendors sell pikes and the vendors who carry them changes so often along with changes in regulations IMO makes the sticky a good idea. Instead of waiting for someone to mention something casually in their personal thread about such a change they cold update the sticky making the info. readily accessible and hopefully increasing the speed with which we become aware of such changes so we can adapt more quickly. As it is I think the fact that it's so hard to source pikes that is also a turn off and by having new info. about said sources readily available I think it'll help our section grow. I could be wrong though this is just my opinion.

I'm glad your with me on the species list as well as the seasonal availability and I fully agree it isn't going to easy finding such info. especially detailed info. As for the seasonal availability I was going to check MFK and other sites and see when vendors added pikes to their lists as well as talk to some who collect pikes themselves and see what time of year pikes are better collected in. Hopefully we'll get a decent idea so we can always know when to save our money for the next big pike influx. I used to do seasonal availability lists for myself when I was into Armatus and some other seasonal fish and it was a big help in making sure I was ready both with room and money for when fish I wanted became available. I'm going to have to check out Vinny Kutty's site based on your recommendation and I plan on joining The Cichlid Room Companion so I could see what they have to offer as far as pike info. goes and pass that knowledge on here.

Yeah he was a mad man when it came to pikes but as others have said he doesn't log on often anymore. I'm trying to see if I can Mod this section so I can help you guys out getting these things going.

Nice, thanks for the info. Gotta love Jeff, not only does he sell quality fish but he knows his stuff.
