I'm just curious as to why the christmas lights. For the same amount of money you could have DIY'ed a proper higher power LED system, with far less bulbs, and they would have more than enough oomph to penetrate the water column. I just finished mine and I'm loving it!!!

Good luck.....can't wait to see the finished product.

At least with Me. Doing a DIY project is about using what is found locally without having to special order stuff to achieve an effect. Sometimes I want a specific thing.. say a 37 1/2 inch lighted area, but the closest thing available is a 32 inch or a 42 inch. I could just settle for the closest or I can going shopping for something locally and bring it home right away and start work or I can shop endlessly online for parts, order and wait for them to arrive and hope I achieve the effect that I want because online the parts looked like they would work and might be bigger or smaller than I thought they were online

I am using common, re-cycled parts that most people will have just laying around wasting...

Now by definition, I am not a tree hugger, but I do believe we all should cut out the wasting of energy and resourses where we can. This is just a light that I am building, (when my body says I can!) that is an exersize in that practice. I am showing the cost to build, but most all of this stuff people will have lying around eventually.
Cost to run will be the hit.
The old lighting was drawing a rated 130 watts for brand new bulbs. And that is for a diminishing amount of light...
If I can get equal lighting for <25% of the wattaage draw, It will be a win win...;)

I will be back on project as soon as the wheels will let me...

I wish i came across this thread a week earlier...
just spent $45 on the R2 signature series moonlights... this might have been a lot more fun to make

i cant wait for these pics. I've got a 180 gal with two 30 watt fluro's and i really dont like the fact you have to replace them all the time. I've looked into doing what neogenesis said but when you look into getting the bulbs, then the controller, then the transformer etc its more complicated than going out buying xmas lights, drilling holes and attaching.

Looking forward to doing this in the new year.
