I just notices it about 2days ago and I've been doing 50% water changes for the past 2days... Hes starting to get really pale. Nitrate us somewhere between 0pp and 5.0pp (its a very light orange in the tube) Nitrite and amonia is 0pp... Hes in a 30g with my peacock eel, they're good buddies so I'd hate to loose the ZZ... But the peacock is fine not breathing hard at all. Anyone have any ideas what I should do? Thanks

Oh yeah, I added some salt and the temp is 82 degrees.

Sounds like ammonia. Your tank may be going through a mini-cycle. I have encountered this before and would like to know what others have to say. I havent seen red gills, but just lethargic fish, that will sit on the bottem and not eat. ecspecially if a benaitial bacteria spew occurs.
Good luck with him.

Thanks... I really like this little guy hopefully he pulls through. But ifs it a mini cycle then why would me ammonia be 0?... This is frustrating poor little dude doesn't look to happy.

Possible parasites, such as gill flukes?.. are you 100% the peacock is not harassing him? anything else different or odd about him or his behavior? the fact one's effected and not the other really makes me think aggression.. turn the tank-lights off and watch them for awhile.. spiney's can and will be sneaky about aggression. a pic would help as well. it could also be bacterial/fungal.

I'm not sure what is wrong with him but you should first quarantine him in another tank so the disease/parasite cannot spread to your peacock. From there you can see if the new water helps relieve the redness and if not proceed to different treatments from there. Good luck!

I watched them all the time (lights on and off) and the peacock and him were always buddy buddy... But unfortunately this morning he was dead... But all his color was back and gills looked fine no redness. I'll probably do another water change and keep a good eye on my peacock. I really doubt it was aggression so it might have been disease/parasite. That makes me so upset because I just went through my box of fish meds and I have a 10pack of API pro-series General Cure, Anti parasitic fish meds... At least I have it if the pea starts acting up, do you know if this is safe for scaleless?

Once I'm sure all is well in the tank, I might consider doing a little community. Its already very empty and lonely.

Sorry you lost him =( What are your tank perameters? Generally meds and sclaess fish are touchy.. I always 1/2 dos the first day or 2 and do a full dose on the 3rd if the fish show no signs of ill effect to the meds.. if they do. immediate 50% WC and no meds for 48 hours. I also leave my carbon, ect in while treating.

The parameters are in the first post. But yeah I've heard that scaleless fish are very sensitive to meds, but so far so good the peacock isn't breathing hard and his colors are good... But I can tell hes lonely, it seems like hes looking for his buddy. They'd always hangout in the sand together and follow each other around. Anyone have any suggestions for some new tank mates? Preferably something that wont out grow the 30g and wont get eaten :]

But its still a mystery why he might have died so I'd really like it if someone threw out some ideas... Just for future reference.

Thanks.
