Sorry if this is a double post but can't find the original. Just a reminder to always exercise caution. I got lucky in that there was no real damage.burn 1.JPGburn 2.JPGburn 3.JPG

Had that happen more than once. That's why I'm a big fan of:

GFCI: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter - pops a circuit breaker in the plug as soon as a ground short is sensed.

Holy smoke. Thank god you are ok and your property is ok. I'll be securing my power strip high from now on.

I had a live current running through my water once in awhile. Whenever I had my hand in the tank I would get a faint zapping sometimes I had to wear rubber gloves. There was always so much moisture on top of my tank and near and around the electrical cords. I never new what was actually doing it. But once I was able to keep everything dry it stopped zapping me!

Some great examples posted by Phil of how to run a safe system in your home, especially using GFCI's, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter receptacles and/or breakers, something everyone with a fish tank should be using. To add to that I run a grounding probe in all of my tanks. For those not sure how a grounding probe works you can find more electrical safety tips in the following past discussion on this topic. Just ignore the comments by Madness. :)

I'm just a broke dude in an apartment with 15 amp non-gfci circuits using simple power strips. But there's easy stuff you can do to protect yourself.

I like to try and keep my power strips above everything. Buy a half way decent powerstrip, this is a $30 phillips multimedia power center, rated at over 1500w using just 150w for heating and less than 100w for lights and filters

If I can't manage to have the power strip above everything I try to isolate it.

Space was limited in my cabinet on this tank so it's mounted beside the 40b sump. All cords have a drip loop and I made a splash guard. There are 2 powerstrips here. One heavy duty powertool garage power strip rated at 20amps and 2000w with a 14 guage cord runs the return pumps and heaters. The other one runs lights, air pumps, power heads.

Same sump. Proper cable routing and cord management will make your lide easier
