We all know fish will die sooner or later. But what is the most painful unexpected fish death you have experienced?
Mine was probably when i was 9 , i set up a pond , no filtration and no cycling..
i dropped about 200 juvy kois and most were dead in a few days =(
Ive also lost an asian aro that somehow jumped through a heavy glass lid.
the most surprising:
all was good until I woke up the next morning to find my first ever pair of rays dead. they were rectic rays.
the most painful:
my pair of motoros perished, after about 8 months in my care.

the three most memorable fish fatalities I have experienced are, from greatest to least:
1) my caribas dying off due to heater failure in 6th grade
2) losing a N. venustus cichlid due to unknown cause
3) losing a 4" green terror due to larger texas cichlid.

I remember Phatboys ray loss... WW was Pfish back then.. it was big drama over there everybody wanted to know how you killed you ray. LOL
But in your defense,, rays are very unforgiving when it comes to water quality..
you make the smallest mistakes, you already see something the result on the ray..
Wickedmidas, i also remember your loss.. that was just a few mos ago right??

redtailfool
04-05-2005, 11:27 PM
it was just probably shock from shipping. Sellers a good guy, he promised to replace the loss.
movers were 9 hours late. fish suffocated:
1- 16" ocellaris bass male
1- 14" monoculous bass female- these were proven breeders
1- 12" royal pleco
1- 13" tiger shovelnose cat
1- 9" blocii/ shovelnose hybrid cat
1- 11" lapradei bichir jumped out and died the next night
1- 12" alligator gar died the next day
1- 9" orbignyi ray took a month to die but was whithering away the entire time and wouldn't fatten up.
if you're wondering, never use the company called "two men and a truck".

I had some weird mysterious die off. My guess was a tank poisoning but still not sure what caused it as all my water parameters were perfect.

i had a 15 inch silver jump@ 3 am athrough a very thick home made glass lid

I knew something was up but i was too tired from doing the squeaky :D
Needless to say i found the aro dead the next day.

I lost 5 rays all together. It was horrible, and everyone was flaming my ass off; it was a big dispute to the point where the seller was almost forced to refuse selling me any more rays.

LOL Sorry i had a lot of unexpected losses!!
Heres another one..
My sister bought me my 1st jardini for my bday and i bought a 75g tank to house the jar.
Took the tank, filled it up with water ,put some anti chlorine heater, filter and im done. I dumped the fish after acclimating it and i was lucky enough to watch the poor jardini disentigrate and die the same day.
I believe it was because NJ has chloramines and i only used a chlorine and not a clorine/chloramine remover.

hello all new guy here... biggest lost for me was waking up one morning to find my male clown knifefish floating... both my male and female were about 12-14 inches... got rid of female a year later when she was just over 18 inches long...
piranha45
04-20-2005, 11:33 PM
you think she killed the male or he died of some other cause, sypher?
sypher
04-21-2005, 1:30 AM
the male had no marks on him so had to be something else... what it was i have no clue... very strange...
Biggest unexpected loss was a whole 55g community tank, some ******* dropped a cigar butt in it during a party and by morning everything was dead, even the snails. Most unexpepted was an american eel whick was found one morning in my nieghbors swimming pool, lesson on that one is that if you keep eels you should use clamps to keep your lids on, they are strong and like too explore.

my biggest fish loss was Sam, my Pleco. I moved from Ohio to Charlotte. Sam was in the car with me the whole way in "his" cooler with his water. All was good here until that first water change. He was in suspended animation- nearly frozen during an Ohio blizzard, in a national diaster (flood) evacuation, no power, the whole mess, and then a 9 hour car ride. Was a real trooper and then I changed 25% of his water and BAM! Ick, then death.

was the temp of the new water much different from the temp of the old water? was the water dechlorinated/dechloramined?

had 2 rays that wouldent eat. they lived for about 2-3 months and the killed over  . the worst was they where a gift. i found out later it was probably the ph. tride to get it down but due to the hardnes of the water in my area it wouldent go down. i would adjust it and the next day it was right back where it started. good news is it is perfect for my african cichlids.
hey why do you freez the fish?

I lost a 24" tigrius catfish due to overfeeding the tank with market shrimp. I was bummed since I had him for about 4 years and the weird things was all my rays were still doing fine when the catfish died.
i lost a 20" arapima for no reason too and I raised him from a 4 inch baby...
I'm sure theres more but those were the ones that died mysteriously and not killed..

Same thing happened to me a few years ago in my 55 gal tank... My 10" oscar used to go nuts when the kids ran through the room... one day he hit the heater and there were sparks everywhere... killed him instantly and my 6" jack dempsey, an 8" sailfin pleco, and a big 8" clown loach (that all the fish in the tank surprisingly got along with, even the oscar). The surge even blew out the motor on my cannister filter.
After that loss, I gave my tank to my sister for her preschool classroom and stuck with my 39 gal boring community tank.
But now that I've found this site, the mfk in me is starting to come out again. Now all I need is a bigger tank!! or 2... or 3... or 4........

nobody with common sense wants kids. The problem is people who dont want kids are naturally bred out of the population by their own choice, lol.
My biggest was the last time I had monsters..
DEAD:
19" RTC
22" TSN
15" Tiger Oscar
13" Midas with biggest nuchal I have ever had (still not great, but nice..)
Alive:
14" Paroon
22" Red Tail Giant Gourami
26" Silver Aro
19" Blue Snakehead
230 gallon - I know I was playing with death...too crowded, but 20% water change every 3 days, tank was sumped - 60 gallon overflow with 600gph pump, 3 fluval 403, 4 Aquaclear 500 and a Rio pump for extra surface aeration..
What happened:
I fed my catfish large sticklebacks, beef-heart and squid - lots of it.
Power went off during the day while I was at work
I come home, park my car in front of my house, and I could alread smell the stench of dead fish outside by my car 15 ft away from the house.
Get inside, see about 10 partially digested sticklebacks, and other crap..2/3 of my favorite fish dead. When the power went off, they must have been breathing hard, and they all must have threw-up. Made things worse.
What surprised me was the Paroon shark made it. Would have figured he would be a goner. Can understand all the other fish, as they all breathe air, but the paroon..I was so heartbroken I got rid of EVERYTHING and shut-down the tank for about a year...told myself no more monsters...
2 years ago, I started up the tank, got africans and SMALL centrals..and a few odd-balls here and there. Now I come across this site, and it has renewed my passion! lol
I am leaving work right now to pick up my first Tigrinus..wish me luck..no more crowding...I have to pick between getting rid of a 3.5" black rhom or 4 - 2.5" Herichtys bartoni - all in full color....I just can't decide.....Tigrinus will eat bartoni, rhom will kill Tigrinus, Tigrinus-rhom-bartonis all fish food in big tank..
hmm...rhom in sump...that should work! Yet another sump fish!
rui, man that is one huge disaster.....no wonder u shutdown tank
good luck with your tig.....this guy will be monster soon

I had lost many fishes that I liked, however last yr on my birthday I lost an albino coridory. I know you must be laughting but that was the oldest fish I had and if she/he would be alive that would be 3 yrs now. during my party someone must had scared the fish by shaking my tank or something, so wen after everything was over I went to cheack on the fishes and he was sucked by my filter and died. After that I dont let no one, I mean no one get closer to my tanks without my permition!
