49 inches is the max in the wild. So yeah they get pretty big.
They shouldnt hit that big in the tank though. Probably 2-3 feet , just like
an arowana. But it will take years for that to happen.

Tropical gars are from Central America.

Cuban gars are from Cuba.

All other gars (spotted, floriday, alligator, shortnose, longnose) are from North America.

Did I miss any?

Sorry woochuck, I wasn't ignoring you, it is just that I have never kept one and didn't know if you were asking about the true gars or the fish sold as gars like hujetas or needle fish. True gars in general are supposedly fairly mellow with fish more than 1/2 their own size and the same is said to be true of aros but it depends on the individual fish, a freinds silver aro is a bully and picks on anything not bigger than it is.

T-gars are awesome fish, I have one in a tank right next to me as I'm typing this. Unfortunenately as far as I know there aren't any for sale in the US as the importer of them has now sold out, and I don't think that anyone plans on bringing them back into the US (they are expensive, and good ol' George at the Shark Aquarium took quite a chance in bringing them in... and it is much appreciated!). By the way, are you by any chance asking this because you saw the article on them in TFH? If so, you may like to know that Sol (E_americanus) who is a member of this board wrote that article. :)

Trop Gars are very unique among gars, they are in fact the most primitive of the Genus Atractosteus. Unfortunatly though the above is correct and none of these fish are available in the US once again. I'm not seeing them coming in again for a very long time.

For those interested here are a few pics of the fish imported from Mexico from George at Shark Aquarium.

Cool! Richard's here too. B) I'll post a pic of mine soon, once I find my camera, lol... maybe we can the t-gar owners together and post the pics of the off-colored ones also. :)

Tropical Gars can still be bought here in the US . Pm me if you want to order em.

T-Gars are sought after because they are rare. Unfortunately, they dont appeal to much to me ( or maybe fortunately so i dont have to spend money? :D ) . Cuban Gars ,on the other hand are yummy.

BGG.. then there you go.. you have all the answers. Saw them swimming lazily in the lower tanks and thought they were still for sale. Tell G to make sure he puts a mark on those bad boys as the staff might bag them up by mistake. LOL

Peanut_Power
08-29-2005, 12:37 AM
OH MAN THAT WOULD BE FUNNY!!! LOL!! Someone sells ur special t-gars...especially that extra one...;)...of 'cheaper' value....:P

redtailfool
08-29-2005, 12:39 AM
Its unlikely to happen. Knowing G he has already given a heads up to his staff
that those fish arent to be touched. If a tank has fish without a price tag, its not to be sold...

But then again... there was a tag and price on it !

BGG im just kidding. The gars are not gonna disappear im sure.
