Royals are probably one of the few plecos I wouldn't worry about too much with putting with polys. Personally I don't keep the two together just because of a bad experience with a gibbi and sen, taking the royal's diet into account I wouldn't worry much.

Never really had a predatory poly until I got my endli he emptied my tank of pretty much everything that fit in his mouth, and quite a few corys he couldn't eat but killed anyway. :( sorry for your loss dude.

Beautiful fish, as for them being pests that's definitely true, a pike swimming in the waters will send any pan fish into hiding.
