Your best bet is Sally's bloodworms and a sponge filter. Something that you don't clean and small bits of whatever you feed stick to.

THIS, constant feeding opportunities is what these fish need. Not 3-6 big feedings but constant access to food.

This and the idea of a drip bucket with food suspended inside. That was a great idea that I would try too.
I'd say 90% chance your previous one just didn't get enough food. I love this fish as an adult, hate it as a Juvie


How is the second Afro now? Still alive? I'd love to get an update and see a picture

You're right about the bloodworm size, the method however is effective for whatever food you choose

i had five 3.5-4" afros at one time. As stated by others, they're difficult to raise at this delicate stage. My experience is that tropical flakes, sponge filters, 25%WC every 3-4 days, mild mannered or minimal tankmates (loaches 4 me), small amounts of bloodworms (3 days a week), and a sandy substrate works best.
