the short Florida gar would be Florida gar and the other is most likely be long nose gar that caught in Florida. There is not much different to tell and I only know two people who can tell by looking(Which Polypterus being one of them), other than that you have to have place of origin (AKA the place they caught the fish that is within spotted gar wild range or Florida wild range) or a DNA test.
99% Florida. No need for DNA tests, just grow the gar up a little, then it will become even more obvious of what specie it is. I agree with Hung, spotted an Florida gars are confused often, I myself made this mistake.
