I use the xp3. Easy to clean and disconnect, which was my primary concern when it comes to canisters. I never had a issue with priming. If I'm doing a bigger water change(meaning water level below input) I add more extensions to the input so it stays full of water. Also make sure canister is refilled with tank water.

liked my fx5s also would of kept them if I had space at the time but oh well.

I love my classics also, I dont find cleaning them too hard normally I cheat and just sit them on a few bricks aim the tap down and get the hose ( from water change pump ) and spray the inside as I use a 10,000 lph pump for water changes it gets most of the junk out, every few months I will fully open them also and do a full clean.

Never tried the xp units but have read mixed reviews. Bit like the fxs I guess lol.

What is the OPs budget ?

Seems to me the budget is around $200-$275 range with his choice of 2 Rena XP3.

Eheim 2262 --- $550-$600 to set one up.
Fluval FX5 --- $350-$400.

I will look up Aquatop cf500uv ($130-$140) + Rena XP3 ($120-$130). Prices are with media included.

Tip on Aquatop cf500uv ---- Cut the hose accordingly with minimal slack otherwise you will be in priming hell. I have Also if you are not fond of spraybars, you can replace this with this 3/4" inch ... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=14680

Tip on Rena XP series ---- Get away from using their micron filter. Once this is clogged up, flow will decrease considerably. Also according to Rena, this is one time use only. So to lessen expense, no need to use it (also recommended by Rena rep I spoke with.

I don't know if it is the best but I am really happy with me marineland 360c rated for 100 gallons I love it. real easy to clean not nosy and doesn't leak. They have good warranty to. You can step up to the 530 and it should work good .

Marineland 360c is a very good filter, it gets the job done without spending a fortune.
