Do you have a gravel cleaner/hose? Water changes, i'd go for twice a month.

with a 12" blue channel and 2 oscars, you tell him to do 2 wc a month??? with that bio-load in a 55g, he should be doing 2x WEEKLY

you honestly need to think about upgrading your tank. if thats not possible, you most definatly will need to get rid of your oscars. properly fed, and cared for, an oscar should reach MINIMUM 10", possibly 12 or 13". theres no way a fish that size should be kept in a 55g tank which is only 12" wide, leaving the oscar no room to turn.

theres alot of other interesting fish that would fit for life in a 55g. as suggested, a jack dempsey fits the bill well. they get to a good size, but just small enough to live out a decent life in a 55g. plenty colorful as well.

i wouldn't take the word of the people from petsmart or petco. they say that red snook only need 20g tanks and that oscars can live in a 30g tank their whole life, which is way off
Don't listen to those people who told you not to add anything else instead of going for the sale. Go find some other store that will give better advice and sell you anything no matter what. Get rid of the channel unless you are planning a pond and upgrade for the oscars. Or get rid of everything and start over with fish that stay smaller. Either way increase water changes drastically.

Optimal for O's is 75gal or larger. In a 55, just do daily or every other day water tests, if you see your nitrates rising, do a water change, and finding another home for the cat is a MUST! :)

Try Upgrading to a 75g, keep your 55 put your Channel cat. in the 75, use the 55 for a growout for the oscar's, then when the oscar's get 10 - 14 inches sell your cat to an LFS and there you go. Or Get a 120g and put all of them in there when the oscar get's bigger. I keep 2 oscar's in a 75g that are 12".
What about the channel cat? He gets way to big for even a 120
EDIT sorry I misread your post bro. Good idea
