A female would be fine. They max at 6". Females look nicer than male IMO. Nics are very active and feisty cichlids. One of my favorites. Here is my female.

nice fish everyone! I've sold the firemouth and tetras and I'm going to go lay-buy the tank, canister filter and black sand today. I'll have to buy a bigger heater too.

Righto, I've got the tank, sand and filter on lay buy now. The tank actually looks a fair bit deeper than 18in. I'll measure it next time I go in.
