I would get a crate for the new puppy. Any time you are gone, it should stay in the crate. It also helps with potty training. There is also a huge range of personalities in shepherds. I have three of them currently and have also had them in the past. Getting the pup lots of exercise will make your life much easier. A tired pup tends to be less destructive. Also make sure you are socializing from day one. Get the pup out meeting new people and new dogs, but make sure it is on leash and behaving before it gets to play. Have fun with it, GSD can be a challenge but also a lot of fun.
