This happened to my male jaguar cichlid. He slammed against the glass one night. He lived another 2 years after that before passing away last month.
They have to use the front half of their body to propel their tail with enough force to get movement. The further the break to the head the harder it is for them to move.
It also happened with some red snakeheads of mine back before the ban. They were in a tank at a buddies and he added an electric catfish. It shocked them bad enough it brake their backs. They lived a few years before I gave them to a local fish store.
He'll live hopefully, but usually they always have this method of swimming after.
