I believe the mortgage add some interest in it (whatever the interest you pay on your mortgage), but honestly, I rather go that route and have a peace of mind than have to worry on every April and November to come up with the cash.
Our tax bill is roughly $1100 a year. I set aside $100 a month in a seperate account. Come December, I don't worry about coming up with a chunk of money to pay the taxes. I can't imagine having to pay some of the tax amounts that have been posted in this thread!

yea it's easy enough to put some money aside if the lump sum is roughly $1000

but if it's anything from $4k and up I would absolutely hate to front that twice a year.

I know people who've gotten themselves into some trouble trying to do that. I'd much rather split it up into each mortgage payment

Heard something interesting on the radio that pertains to this. They were talking about how people are demanding socialism and it is spreading like cancer. People feel entitled to services from the government now instead of working to provide for them selves. They feel like the government should take care of them.

So people feeling the need to be taken care of are voting for people promising free services. Then the taxes go up to pay for these services and cost of living goes up and people cant afford to live in those states any more given examples NY,NJ,CA,IL (highest states of attrition). So they move to other states NC,SC,TX (high states with population growth) and then vote for people offering the same programs repeating the cycle. So socialism and higher taxer are spreading like cancer.

Ours are about $2000/year for a 1700 square foot house on seven and a half acres. It would be more, but most of the property is under a tax deferral - five acres are planted in Christmas trees and eight tenths of an acre are classified as "woodlot". We live in the county, so we really don't get any services. The DOT maintains the highway, so I guess access to the regional library is about the only thing we get for our property taxes.

SC? Really? Their average taxes for the same value house(and similarly priced) is twice what it is in GA. It was one of the deciding factors for my relocating, one of the first places I considered was Aiken, SC.
