So my k1 chamber is connect with the 3" pipe so it drops down into the equipment chamber, the one with the bio balls has the 3" pipe at the bottom to keep the water level low for the bio balls, in theory it will result in that barrel and the equipment chamber being the same water level. I just put a 1 inch bulkhead with either a 3/4" or 1/2" barb whereally I wanted the water level to sit in those barrels in the equipment barrel after accounting for power outages and such and am just going to use some tubing going straight to my floor drain. Hopefully the uniseals do their job.
So the red tote lids just go up and I replace the filter pad easy. This is inside. The bio balls are suspended with egg crate something like a foot off the ground, and you can't see but here is a 3" pipe between that and the bottom of the equipment barrel above via uniseal. In the k1 there is a section of 3" pipe slotted with a saw thanks to the patience of millerkid519 millerkid519 with a cap on the bottom to keep k1 from going anywhere. Could use both more k1 and scrubbies.

Nice set up, thanks for all the info, I can get my hands on 3 brand new 35 gallon drums, being that my tank is 320 do you think I would be ok with 3 35 gallon drums instead of 3 55 gallon drums? How much K1 do you have in that 55 gallon drum? I was going to order 4 cubic feet if I go with the 55

I agree, why limit yourself? More room the better. I think that's 1.75 cuft however as said I should probably get more. You can easily fit double that in there, 100 litres. If you have substrate you may not need more.

The more media you can have the better it is. Obviously the three 35 drums would suffice but 55s would be ideal.

I got mine from a horse farm. They're food grade right? Try tractor supply companies or even farms, you'll find em on sale eventually.

On craigslist near me selling for 10-30 bucks for 55 gallon barrels. I've seen tons on the free section ad though. I've seen a 500 gallon container for free too lol I have no idea what that used for
