lots of different species of algae grow due to sunlight, not just what were commonly used to seeing in our "enclosed" systems. What is kelp??? its algae, and grows several feet a day depending on the "amount" of sunlight. plants under go photosynthesis, which is there way of getting nutrients, and some algae is considered as a plant.
