Red Devil laying eggs? is this normal?

I have witnessed this behavior in my own tanks some years ago but the females where at seperate ends of the tank and fought each other but both guarded the eggs as if they where fertilized.

I saw this happen in an 800 gallon tank in the local library, these females would pair off and lay eggs and defend them, well they wouldn't hatch because they weren't fertilized so they would eat them after a few weeks. They did this about every month or two, women are nuts!

Mystix212, cichlids are egg layers, I don't believe any of them give birth to live young.

Of course I was kidding. I was just taking the piss.

Do they need to lay on flat surface like inside flower pot or flat rock ?
