I did it the other way--I match the drain rate to the full output of the pump using a slice gate. I have a Herbie style overflow with 2 main drains, 2 emergency drains, my pumps just run full output all the time. I sleep better at night that way because I can't see anyway the tank will overflow, and because the tank is dead silent.

If you wanted to do that in your tank, with one drain per overflow, then one drain would need to be able to the full output of your pump, draining at full siphon. If not, you'd need to drill a hole for 1 or 2 more drains in one of your overflows. Got room for that?

Either way, if you're gonna rely on drains running at full siphon, I think you better have an emergency drain.

^ That's what I've been working on for mine, although I won't go into my issues here.

I will say this, I was looking at drilling my tank, and came across quite a few threads warning of drilling tempered glass because it will shatter. This was a big concern of mine when I looked at options. You have one big advantage in that your tank isn't full right now. I'd highly suggest testing your glass before drilling and shattering it. Often they cut the hole and then temper the glass at the factory.

There's a lot fo videos out there, do a search, but here's just one that shows the concept of testing glass.

uploadfromtaptalk1424825606906.jpguploadfromtaptalk1424825618264.jpg only problem I have is that this pump seems to keep raising the temp in my tank. Yesterday after work I found it at 83.7. I added ice abd dropped it to 81.3 and now it is back to 82.5 and slowly climbing. What should I do, I've been keeping everything else off but the pump (mag 24) so it has to be the pump. I think I might need to change out pumps to something like this http://m.ebay.com/itm/360984264382?nav=SEARCH, what do you guys think? Lol, I guess it's not quite running perfectly if I'm having temp issues huh.

Tank heading on it's own had been solved. It's heating because there is no air flow in the hood. No evaporative cooling can take place. I opened the hood all afternoon and the temp has dropped to 79.7, so happy that's all it was. I'm going to put breather holes in the canopy tomorrow. :)
