Because unfortunately that's part of their job. When we took that oath we swore to be willing to pay the ultimate price to protect our freedom.

That was the original story but after terrorists nor nuclear weapons were found it became saving the Iraqi people and creating a democratic state, while at the same time a genocide is taking place.

Side tracking a bit here but...,
I object to "war-time" infringements on civil liberties (which I served to protect) in what is a war in name only. A "war" cannot be waged on a loose group of criminals, only anti-crime measures can be performed. A "war" requires a defined enemy that maintains a government of it's own. Calling a series of anti-terrorist acts a "War" does not make it true. If it does we now have several other unsuccessful "wars" going on as well, all declared by various political entities, the "War on Crime", the "War on Poverty", the "War on Drugs", and the "War on Illiteracy". The only real war we are fighting right now is the one our illustrious president has already declared we won, Iraq.

Update

National Geographic reports that 85% of young Americans (18-24) cannot identify Iraq, Afghanistan or Israel on an unmarked map. 56% cannot find the Indian subcontinent.

Gets better

Only 19% can name four countries that acknowledge having nuclear weapons:clap
