Central american setup tank

I'd go with another con as well. Have a breeding pair. I've kept them in a 10 gallon before, successfully, so I don't think you'd have a problem with space. Also, if that doesn't interest you, set it up for rams. I'm currently setting up a 25 that will be for rams, with maybe a school of neon tetras (the ultimate monster fish!!!), a small catfish or two and some pearl gouramis. I know... None of those really belong at monsterfishkeepers.com, but ah well.

Are you serious you kept a pair of convict cichlids in a 10 gallon tank :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:

A breeding pair of convict cichlids require (which means they NEED ) 25-30gallons of water for them to live happily 30gallons or more been the best for them 25gallond of water been the minimum these fish grow to around 6" and are very agressive and territorial they require space ask anyone who keeps or breeds these fish successfully you'd be a fool to keep them in any thing smaller that a 25gallon.

You could keep smaller convicts in smaller tank space and even convict fry that would be fine but 2 adults NO NO NO !!! I'm a moderator in the cichlids forum because of my knowledge of cichlids! i know what i'm talking about, my knowledge comes with experience!!! ;)

yeah my cons spent their first couple months in a 10g (they bred @ approx 1.5"-2"), then 3-4 months after in a 20g long. lotsa water changes should be expected and a divider kept on hand if they start fighting too hard. mine have been in a 55 or 75 since.

ive always kept black substrate in my tanks, because i believe it helps darken the coloration of my fish, but id almost go no substrate if keeping a pair of cons in a 20g for an extended period of time. anything to help keep the tank clean.

Aye, I agree. A 10 Gallon is WAY too small for a breeding pair of Convicts. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!! LOL :j/k:

Mine has natural colored gravel, some rocks and broken terra cotta pots set up so they have caves. I don't ever mess with plants, cause the usually get dug up.

I think using terra cotta pots is great idea. Did you have to prepare them? If so, how? Thanks!

no offense but you recommended neets instead of cons with barely any knowledge of them and having never kept them before does not sound like sage advice to me. The bottom line is a bigger tank for a pair of cons would be better but a pair of cons could be put into a 2 liter of cola and breed. You could not count the number of people on this forum with breeding cons in ten gallons with all your appendages. I am sure they will be fine ;)

Someone who say's " no offence" usually means to offend or belittle a person so i only have your word that you acctually mean no offence.

Anyway i never gave advice on the Neets i made a suggestion ! And the reason i suggested them instead ov convict was because they grew smaller and they still being central american and would be much better suited for a 20 gallon tank rather than convicts.

But my overall point was if that person would like the best for his/her fish they would require a larger tank. And the individual who mentioned that he kept 2 convict cichlids in a 10gallon tank i personally thought was bad advice and was an irrisponsable thing to do.

True to the fact that convicts do breed like the clapper and would breed easily in a 20gallon tank my point on that matter was just ask the people who intentionally breed these fish to sell and ask them what size tank they have there convicts in it more than likly wouldn't be in a 20 gallon.

I really did not mean any offense and you should also keep in mind that convicts that are breeding at a small size will have stunted growth due to the amount of energy reserves used to make babies making them suitable in a 20 gallon for an even longer time.

All I can say about the neets is trust me they make convicts look like white turtle doves when they are breeding and they are only about an inch smaller than a 6 inch con.

It is also much more financially sound to get 1 more convict than a breeding pair of neets.

I think you will find that very few hobbyist breed cichlids to make a profit. But a lot of them do breed cons as feeders :)
