pay more for wild caught?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
then again, some are only avalible wild, and some-hybrids- are only avalible as captives. know your benifets, of the supplier before purchase

totally depends on the fish for me.
stuff like rays i would go for CB's as with some of the more delicate fish but i have no quams about buying wild caught fish if they are in abundance.

The reason I like wild caughts better is because they are meaner. And when you get them to start eating they eat like they will never see another piece of food.

i personally think their are good and bad things about wild caught and tank breed fish. for example... wild caught discus... honestly for me they look ugly! (no offense to anyone who has one) but the discus breeders who has perfect genetic strains are really beautiful. Definitely they got their first discus wild but that was when they were not mixing blood lines.

tank breed depends on who is breeding them. some people just don't care and just mix all of them together.

but i do have one concern... what about frontosas? if they are F0 or F1 (from wild caught parents) wouldn't that be considered still an excellent genetic strain? i am looking into having a frontosa colony but i am really confused with all this wild and tank breed thing. :screwy:

rkc....i will semi agree with you about wild discus being ugly. they arent supposed to be uber pretty. they have to survive. i like they way mine look very much, as oppose to the pigeon bloods and turqouise discus i have. they have just different patterns and marks on them, plus the way they behave is waaay different then the domestics. the two wilds i have raine over the tank, none of the other fishes even come close to messing with the wilds. however the wilds will put the dom. right in their place.

An F0 or F1 would be a good place to start for a string blood line. they are still close enough to the parents to take after their behavior. they will generally have the same color and act similar. the best thing to do is if your gonna start breeding, once you get into the F4 or so batches add soem wild fishes into the breeders for your "f5" generation. the wild wiill help add genetic differances and strength to the blood lines. i know many discus breeders will add a wild into their regualr breeders now and then to kinda "clean" the line up

i got it then... discus are really nice and beautiful fish. correct me if i'm wrong... is it had to maintain them? some would say.... 25 or 50% water change everyday... some would say once a week. and with regards to R/O water... are they really needed? all these things make me jump out of my seat and say no in buying discus. that's why i was thinking of frontosas instead of discus. either way... is it harder to keep wild caught? or tank breed are more sturdy?:) spending hundreds of $$$ for a colony is no joke and dying on you... it will really hurt my pocket.

Depends on the fish.

I agree with guppy. For color and general health it seems like wild caught tetras blow away farmed ones.
Classic example: neons & cardinals

yeah depends on the fish but never, ever buy wild caught fishes that are on the endangered list. i still want my offspring to enjoy the hobby when their time comes you know
