what will mix with mbuna?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the advice. Could it be used to grow some frontosas out, or is that just asking for trouble?

I disagree with that statement whole heartedly. The overactive nature of the Malawi cichlids causes undue stress for the less active Tanganyikan cichlids.

The same can be said about solely mixing certain species of Malawian cichlids. The fact is there are combinations that can work. Most A. calvus can be kept successfully with most species of peacocks for example. A general statemens like "less active Tanganyikan cichlids" is a bit misleading since many species of Tangs can be absolute monsters. Check out a profile on Telmatochromis dhonti or Neolamprologus christyi. These are two fish I wouldn't house with even the most active or aggressive Malawian.

I agree with you in theory that mixing can be a problem if the chosen species are incompatible for any number of reasons and I wouldn't suggest mixing for the inexperienced aquarist but there are combinations that can be successful and quite appealing.

Malawinut... one and the same!:D

What is wrong with you people. STOP MIXING TANGS WITH MALAWI. Geez. You make me sick, the whole lot of you.

You're funny. I love people that get all huffy over something so inconsequential. . . So what would you say to my 6in male JD that lives in my mixed Tang/Malawi tank? That's right. . . I've got them all in there. Oh yeah, and a couple adult convicts too. You can huff, you can puff. . . but you just can't blow my tanks down. :D :grinyes:

The fronts should be fine in there as long as they're big enough to begin with. They're not often the ones gettin' picked on and until they get big will be fairly passive towards the others. I keep my 2.5in fronts with a breeding colony of guppies along with other things. . . they're fine.

Well some people care about their fish..

And then there are others who just don't care....and don't bother to do the research on the best way to house their fish..... sooner or later someone will get eatin.

I kind of like the silver dollar Idea too was thinking of trying it in my 125g.I have a tiger loach with mine but those might be a bit too rough for what you have.

You know, I'd tell you what i'd say about it, but firstly, I cant be bothered to give you the satisfaction, and secondly, I'd probably be banned from this site (not that that would break my heart). Quite frankly, I could care less what any of you do with your tanks. What bothers me is the ill advice that runs rampant throughout this message board. But you know, I will have to say SphericalCube, you actually made me giggle. I've seldom seen someone so willing to publicly flaunt their own ignorance. :clap I wish your fish well.

Simply stating your oppinion (and experience) will not get you banned. If you personally attack someone and start a flame war, then maybe.
I am really open and interested in what others think. I still have a lot to learn, and without others knowlege I cant do that! There is a reason I asked for your opinion, and I respect your restraint to fight with others, but please dont hesitate to post what you think.

That is either a totally correct or totally incorrect statement. Just depends on what species you are talking about ;) . I've seen little hyperactive Tropheus that look like they are on speed, caffeine, and just had someone zap them with some electricity. I've got Protomelas spilonotus in with some fronts right now and they all don't move much. I mainly do Malawian, but the few species of Tangs I keep I have no problem putting them with similar species. If I did do any New World cichlids, I'd draw the line there since most of the water parameters are usually different. I think that fronts could be put in that tank with the current species and have little to no problems.
It would be alot easier if, at a certain number of fish/tanks, people were required to buy/read certain books. Then we could often ask posters "and just which page did your info come from" . I'm trying so hard to not bring the big "H" up (hybrid), but with some of the Labidochromis comments I've got to say "That ain't natural" :grinno: .

11 months and running. . . . . . . hmm. . . could it be that I have a peaceful exhistence with my fish? Certainly not. . . you must be right. . . they're all going to kill each other. :grinyes: :naughty:  :woot: :clap :headbang2
