i am going out of town for a week and i am worried:screwy: . we havee been having daily storms and loosing the power on a weekly basis. i am usually home and awake to catch it and hook up my battery powered airorator (how the hell is that spelled?). it is usually off for 5 or 6hrs. if im gone and the power goes off how long do you think my fish will last? i should add that i have a big potted sword in the tank (90). my sig has fish list. i know the bichirs can breath air so im not worried about them.
thanks in advance guys:grinyes:

you can throw the gar on the list with the bichirs

Habitat - They inhabit sluggish, sometimes poorly oxygenated water, backwaters and oxbows of medium-to-large rivers and lakes. Longnose gars as well as other gar species are able to tolerate poor water quality by breathing air through its air bladder. They usually are found near vegetation and occasionally in brackish waters.

If your power goes out and you are gone for a week, you could have serious problems.

More than just aeration i would think. If it gets to cool at your house at night, the temp falling too low could kill your fish.
I dont know how long oxygen stays in the water with no circulation or filtration, but i wouldnt think it would be long enough.

However, considering you're in Florida where its warm, i think, and your fishlist, you may be ok.

if you can, find a UPS and hook your air pump up to that:)

thanks, thats right, slipped my mind

un-interuptable power supply
basically just an automatic battery backup. Even a small one would run an air pump for a long time.

Since UPS tend to be kindof expensive, I think that there could be a cheaper way.

You should buy a cheap emergency light that does not need to be hard wired. Six volts would be fine (assuming your pump runs on 4 batteries). If you have a 12 V light you would probably need a voltage regulator (I can help with this, parts are usually available for $1 at your local radioshack, LM7805). Disconnect the power line to the lights. Remove batteries from the aerator. Connect the light wires to your aerator battery terminals (make sure you get the polarity right). Switch on the aerator.

Now, whenever your power goes out, the emergency light will provide power to the aerator and turn it off when the power comes back on. There is the added benefit of extended run time from larger batteries, and when the power comes back on, the batteries will be automatically recharged. Just like a UPS only cheaper.
