Silver Arows may be banned in coming years!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am also worried about clown loaches. They are not bred in captivity and if they are banned, I will dive from my roof head first (figuratively).
The clown loaches are captive produced in Indonesia and Singapore in quantities of the millions. The breeding of these fish is overseen by the govenments and highly regulated. That is why it is illegal to export loaches over 4 inches long as they are kept back as breeding stock.A few years ago there were alot of breeders smuggled out that hit the markets here.I was told several people went to jail and are still there.I also have heard rumors of an impromptu execution for the benefit of the fish exporters in Jakarta but I have never been able to get positive proof of it.However, there have been no more shipped out illegally or otherwise since so the arguement must have been well presented!!

I didn't call you a moron. Should I?
The problem of extinction of species is in no way related to the problem of fish being kept in bad conditions. The latter is a totally different issue and you are in fact highjacking Waldo's thread.

Moreover I disagree that the increase in prices would solve the latter problem. It would make fishkeeping to the privelege of the wealthy.
Last, not least: I do not give a damn what conditions guppys (not Lauren) live in.
I do however care that no species goes extinct.

Please read my posts more attentively and/or grow thicker skin!

I am sorry I totally misread moralistic as moronic. :(

I am not hijacking the thread, I just voiced my opinion on the matter and responded to you when you questioned it.

Silver Arowana is a very large and popular fish, with popularity you have a great demand. There is always someone in business to supply where there is a demand, to match the mass demand fisherman turn to mass exports and killing of the fish thus destroying the population. On the demand side, once the person has this cheap fish, they will put it in a tank that is not suitable and in result the fish dies. Consequences? NONE! The person will simply go to the store and pick up another one for a couple of bucks.

If the fish would in fact cost more money, a person would go ahead and think twice about buying the fish. When a person has to put up some money for a fish, they will get it only after thinking it through and having a proper setup ready for the fish so it would actually live.

I forgive you! After all the two notions might be realated...

You voiced your opinion on a totally different matter an that leads to the thread being defacto highjacked. Blame it on me if it makes you feel better!

I understood you the first time. And I disagree.

On the consumer side higher prices would lead to a decrease in popularity of fish and consequently wipe out the "promotional" value of fishkeeping that I talked about in my first post.
On the "producer" side it wouldn't change anything. General increase in prices will lead to a decrese in "consumption" but will in many cases make fish-farming unprofitable and could cause an increase in black-fish-market and in some cases possibly poaching.

Contrary to what you are imagining, I do not disagree with you for the heck of it.
I sincerely believe that your solution is preposterous.

you can disagree all you want but he's right. To use your example about humans if people had to consider the money that it would cost them to have kids they might think about it more but instead we have government aid to bail SOME of these people out for their lack of preparation. It doesn't matter anyways because if they keep it the way it is now and the fish stay cheap than they will ban or drastically decrease export and they will cost alot more anyway!!

He's right beacuse... he is right?

I have to admit that that hasn't totally convinced me yet.

But thank you for allowing me to disagree! I will take advatage of your generous permission.

look we can argue this till we are blue in the face but that doesn't change the fact that the demand is destroying the supply. reduce the demand and the supply will increase again. common sense. Besides I would rather pay more for a genetically superior wild fish than less for an imbread farm fish anyday.

Oh, I thought these fish were only harvested from their native habitat, I could be wrong. You are much more qualified in the import/export arena than I am. I thought I read an article, but maybe I just drank too many Heinekens and made it up in my head. LOL

Is it just me shekes, or do uncase your flamethrower every time you turn on your computer? I didn't know you could connect a computer and a flamethrower, but you seem to have been successful at it. Does your flamethrower have a USB connection? Try having a discussion without talking down to people.
