im not a fan of charcoal.. never have been.. just cant dont like it... if im going to light something on fire and cook with it... its going to be made of wood..

And as far as taste goes. I prefer the taste of the meat with my choice of spices and seasonings over the inevitable taste you get when using charcoal. Depending on how the meat is spiced I find the charcoal flavor is more often then not a turn off.
