One of my aquariums is broken, I need to buy a new one. However, the aquarium I'm going to buy is bigger than the stand I was using, so until I make a new one, the aquarium must be on the ground.

The filter for the aquarium is a canister filter. So the intake pipe would be on the same level as the intake on the canister. Once primed, would the filter work properly? Has anyone tried using a canister on the same level as the aquarium?

Sorry for my English.

Thanks,
Antoine

I've never had to try that, but it's a very good question. I'm sure someone here will know. I just wanted to let you know that your english is better than a LOT of the people here, so dont let that hold you back

Bonjour, and welcome to MFK!

I'd say it's fine as long as the filter is not above water level.

Good luck,
HarleyK

yea.. water level needs to be higher than the canister. just as long as your filter is not too tall or the tank is too short you will be fine.

Thankyou to all. Merci Harley ;)

That is good news then I'll buy the aquarium tomorrow. The aquarium is 20 inches tall, I'll put the intake halfway down the aquarium, with the canister on the floor.

I was thinking maybe, even once primed, because there is no syphon, the pump would be transferring more water, than the water going in the canister. I'll see tomorrow ;)

It'll work, but you probably already have your tank set up. I am impressed by your english, even translating the metric system for us so we can understand better. What kind of fish are you putting in it? How many litres is the new tank? Good Luck.

You might look into a wet/dry or bioballs with that too, from what I've seen and heard, they work quite well. You probably know that, just trying to help.

One more thought, toyotasrfun was setting up a system that sounds similar to yours, you might talk with him about what he uses.

It should work without a problem. Marineland used to and may still sell a HOB conversion for their Magnum canister filter. Operationally, a canister hanging on the back of an aquarium is similar to one being placed next to an on-ground aquarium.
