Wow. I hope you don't have guests over very often.
I had a customer call me at the store to try to figure out what was wrong with his pleco. After talking to him for about a minute, I discovered he hadn't de-chlorinated his water.
Anyway, he was about 16 or so and brought his mom in with him to the store. He'd caught two 2" turtles recently and had decided to raise them. He thought a pleco would look good in there with them. I talked to them for a while and they were both great. By the end of the conversation, they'd purchased a number of things to help keep the pleco healthy and knew that they'd have to move him to a much larger aquarium fairly soon due to size and to keep the turtles from munching on him as they got bigger.
This beat the hell out of the conversation I had later on with a woman on the phone. It went something like this:
Me: it sounds like you have high nitrites in the water. have you tested for them?
Her: yes, I just did a test. it doesnt' show any ammonia.
Me: no, not ammonia, nitrites.
Her: right. I'm showing nitrates off the chart.
Me: okay, but what are the nitrites showing?
Her: they're off the chart.
Me: your nitrites are off the chart?
Her: yes, my nitrates are off the chart.
Me: nitrItes.
Her: nitrAtes...
I finally, after nearly FIFTEEN minutes of this, had to ask her to bring in a sample.
