Yawning and Jaw Chomping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oscsar does it all the time

They are probably fine. My bass and bowfin do this from time to time. I think they are just stretching out or something. Also it could be aggresion possibly. Not to sure how tiger muskies are on that subject.

Chad

That's is kind of what it looks like. They never open their mouths as wide as they do when they do this yawning thing, and let me tell you - for only 4" fingerlings they have huge mouths and gaping holes to stuff their prey into down their gullets.

I am trying to keep an eye out though. They have seemed really sluggish over the past 2 days since I last feed them minnows (I have been keeping them mostly on Guppies so they don't end up choking to death). I'm praying to God nothing is wrong with them, but again - I may be paranoid over everyones parasite experiences as of late.

I have 4 Tiger Muskies who from time to time will do what I can only describe as a yawn - and I mean they open up really big (didn't know their mouths could be so big already at fingerling sizes).

My question is this: Is this due to a lack of oxygen or some other potential problem with the water?
Yawning is also a sign of high nitrate level

Pics? Debating whether to get some of these little monsters.

I know sly's story....what are you two going to do with them and what size tanks do you have?

Sly you tank is in pretty much the same stage mine is. Your cycle is done so you must have some nitrates in there. I doubt they are high enough to hurt anything yet. Its time for you to change some water now anyway. That will help.
