I got my two alligator gars on Thursday, but it's taken me a little bit to be able to get pictures of them uploaded. I found these gars on Craigslist a few days ago and decided that I may as well try to get them. The previous owner chose me over nine other people since I actually knew something about gars, currently had gars, and could house them for life. He said that he had them for about four months, and they had gone from 4" to 18" in that span of time while in room temperature water. He had gotten them from a friend after getting an aquarium from said friend, and he also mentioned that his friend got them from a somewhat local LFS, so I now know where I need to go soon to try to find more gars.
I currently have them in my 500 gallon pond with my two 18" longnose gars and goldfish. If all goes as planned, they will be moved to my 96,000 gallon pond later this summer. These two gars are about 18" long and are about five to six months old by my estimates. They're definitely full of attitude; they're already helping to keep the goldfish population in check in the pond.
Also, any suggestions for names for these two gars?
Also, here are some new pictures of my Cuban gar (Fidel) and spotted gar (Ann). These pictures were taken at night, so the gars' coloration is a bit more faded than during the day. Please ignore the detritus on the bottom of the aquarium; I took the pictures after feeding them and before I cleaned their aquarium (75 gallon) that night. They're currently feeding on pellets and gar chum, and both gars are growing reasonably fast. I plan on getting them into at least a 180 gallon aquarium by the end of the summer, and I want to add some other tankmates at that point, too. Suggestions?
Sorry, I don't have any new pictures of my two longnose gars; those pictures will come when I get a chance to replace the pond liner (hopefully sooner rather than later, but definitely before the end of summer).
