I just cooked my fish, Thanks Tetra!

Thanks guys, I'll be looking into the hydor inline and/or a couple smaller heaters from a reputable company.

I unplug all heaters in summer. water stays 80-85. Small tanks near windows might need heaters on cool nights.

i keep mine on all year. i guess i could unplug them, but why bother? you might be the only person i ever heard of that unplugs their heaters in the summer.

this would have happened to op either way because the heater would have just malfunctioned later when it got plugged back in.

I also unplug my heater during the summer. Water stays around 85F

ok, i get it; more than one person unplugs their heaters... but why bother, you're just going to plug them in again?

i understand that unplugging a heater is not a huge challenge (although it could be for some people), but what benefit do you get that is worth unplugging your heaters?

am i missing the boat here or is this just some compulsive annual tradition?

I dont even have my heaters in the tanks right now. They dont look great and with summer temps there is no need. My tank is about 86 right now which is not making my JD's happy.

They can still turn on even if they do turn off automatically. Why bother spending the extra few cents. Sheesh. Why NOT unplug your heater to be sure it isnt turning on? Common sense. There isnt a reason not to.

I would contact tetra and see if they can't give some sort of reimbursement for the dead fish. my pleco died too. he was 13 years old and and over 1ft long.... i had a top fin and they gave me a replacement and 15$ for my 'monstro'. its worth a shot...
