Where does it end, will I ever be satisfied?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I currently have 5 tanks setup, 110, 2-100 gallon long tanks, 1-75 gallon, and 1-40 gallon tall. As for tanks not setup let me see if I can count... 2-125 gallon tanks, 4-75 gallon tanks, 2-40 gallon breeder tanks, 6-20 gallon tanks, 1-55 gallon, 1-265 gallon, 1-30 gallon breeder, 1-40 gallon hex, 1-30 gallon hex. hmmm so I have over 400 gallons running now and almost 1200 gallons un setup! I have a major issue. Sick thing Is I plan to setup all these tanks. My stock has been greatly decreased by disease but I'm ready to attack the hobby full force soon as I have a door to my basement so I can move the tanks down there. OH GOD! I'm planning a 300 gallon stock tank filter to handle all the tanks at once! I'm INSANE!!!! And I still want to setup 2 600-1000 gallon display tanks and 1 300 gallon planted display tank!

While the 300 gallon stock tank seems awesome as a filter for all your tanks, but when 1 tank gets something, they will all get it. I would personally never combine filtering for multiple tanks.

you know I feel like fresh water fish are better than saltwater because a saltwater reef tank of about 150-200 gallons would cost me as much or more than all the fresh water tanks I plan to setup! Atleast that is what I tell myself so I feel like I'm saving money!

The answer to you concern my friend will be a 120 watt UV filter on the return and a few quarantine tanks! I've got all my tanks on separate filter already and when I last got my disease It transferred via siphon hose to all my tanks save a few fry tanks. lost over half my breeding stock. The money and maintenance savings on a unified filter will be worth it. I mean if it is a nasty disease most of those jump tanks of a siphon hose or aquarists hand any way so it wouldn't make a difference if unified or not odds are that with how much time I spend in a tank if one gets it they all do. As for parasites etc that would typically jump on a house I'll deal with that through quarantine and the return UV filter! I also will have separate sumps for the future discus tank I hope to have since the PH and temp will be so different.

That's still not going to control everything. There can still be issues. And just because you have QT tanks doesn't mean that your fish can't just suddenly get sick.

They can have parasite/disease that you may not know about, until it's too late- so a QT in that instance would be useless.

Uv's don't kill everything, and you have to make sure that you have the flow spot on or it's only going to be clarifying your water. I have 2 UV's on my 1500 gallon koi tank, they are flowing for sterilization, but there are times that fish just get sick for no apparent reason. All water parameters are spot on, and only 1 fish may be affected.

The Pet Place is a huge store here in PA, they have GIGANTIC UV sterilizers, QT tanks, but they are run on a central system, and they still have issues.

Well see above response. Sperate tanks didn't save me anything last major infection. And I'm really good at managing general illness. I can cure most common ailments with temp changes and water changes, if all else fails a little epson salt will save the day. If there is a tank bomb coming I can't reliably say that separate filters will do me any good based on my experience. Its worth it for me to have 20 mins of maintenance every week instead of 3-4 hours.

If you are in it for the love of fish, then spending 3-4 hours shouldn't be a big deal to you. Going the easy/cheap route majority of the time causes more issues, which will in turn mean spending more time with the tanks.

I have multiple tanks, and I spend about 10 hours a week doing water changes on them.. Where are most people would rather watch tv.

Take a look at what happened to Discus Hans. He had his tanks tied into eachother.. he had a bacterial infection, and he lost his entire business. There is also a large koi farm out west that contracted KHV. They were linked together, and everything had to be disposed of- filters, pond liners, the ponds has to be filled, and re-dug at another place.. millions of dollars was lost.

I don't know about you, but any fish lost is something to take seriously if it was preventable.

And if you are so great with curing things, why did you lose most of your stock from disease?!

I lived in a trailer with my fiance, where we had a 5 gallon tank with 2 goldfish in it.

When we bought our house, we went out and bought a 150.

Then came the 1500 indoor koi tank, the pond, the 240, 180's...

I now have over 60 tanks.

We have only lived in this house for 2.5 years... And we are thinking of moving because we have run out of tank room. haha!

dam over 60 tanks, hardcore! can i move in? i can cook and wash your cat lol hahaha

i started when i was young like really young around 5? my old man had a arowana pond with 2 huge RES turtles at his church, it was freaking awesome i fell in love the moment i saw it. and since then i have had a number of tanks and all kinds of different fish & even herp... so much i lost count! and it all started with my very own koi tank when i was 5. honestly i think i was pro for my age. ppl told me what to do & etc i never neglected anything i had to do for my fishes :) you can imagine a 5 y/o boy using a pot to do water changes standing on a chair making a mess on the floor... lol but im never satisfied with the size of tank i have. i think i will only be satisfied if i have one the size of seaworlds tanks...lol my goal or more like a dream is to buy a house and add a 80,000g aquarium similar to one of the members on here (forgot his name he has a 55,000g added to his house)

We started out with a bowl and 2 goldfish 7 years ago, read up on them and exploded to 5 tanks and many fancy expensive goldfish. Fast forward 2 years. Got an incureable disease and was forced to euthanise my stock. Got out of the hobby. 2 years later, I was forced to give up my quest for my black belt due to health issues so I had to have something to do. Didn't want goldfish. I'm trying to experience all kinds of freshwater fish. So right now I have a 55 gallon and a 10 gallon. I have a 75 gallon I'm going to make my first cichlid tank. Very exciting. I don't think I'll ever have enough especially if I get a drip system for my next big tank. I'd like a tank big enough for a ray or two and some p bass. I love their colors!
