Plecos for Small Aquariums

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, so far we've got the L46s and bristlenoses as plecos that are reasonably easy to breed and can live in those aquariums. Are there any others out there that fit those criteria?

L046 is not an option for a tank that size, and not that easy to breed. They are not an easy to keep pleco, and are very expensive. 40G breeder is minimum size to keep a healthy group of these.

Ah, okay. Maybe I'll have to free up a larger aquarium in order to pull something off. Think a 65 gallon (48" x 18" x 17") would work well for such an endeavor?

I might not go with L046 at this moment because of their relatively high cost, but I could always try another species in order to get my feet wet. As I said before, I like the plecos with striped patterns, so that's what I'm going to try to get.

Try L134 leopard frog plecos. They need a larger tank, but a 40B or 65 would work great. They have been bred in aquaria many times, and are not as challenging as some of the other striped plecos. To start out though, start with bristlenose plecos. They will get you use to the care of breeding plecos.

Clown pleco, L eopard frog pleco & Zebra pleco. I placed them in this order because of their cost. The clown being the least expensive & the zebra (L46) being very expensive.:)

Try l340 mega clowns too. They arnt exactly a clown pleco but thats what everyone calls them. l340

This would be your best bet, L340 get to be about 3-4", they will eat almost anything and they are reportedly one of the easiest hypancistrus to breed. I currently have a few growing out in a 20 gallon and they seem to be doing fine.

I have 3 growing in my 10 gallon. Not very active tho.
