Post Where You Get Your Ray Food. (in quantity)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Before I sold most of big dats, I was at a rate of 40 lbs of smelt a month, 10 lbs of shrimp and tilapia combo.

I get smelt from asian grocery store, I pay $ 2.50 for the gutted and headless smelt (less oily) and you get all the good stuff versus the whole smelt.

like ive heard people say if u want to keep rays its expensive

I was at $ 200 a month for fish food between smelt, shrimp, tilapia, massivore and nightcrawler. Our family grocery bill in a month is $ 400 :D

Thanks for letting me know about Smelt. Im going to give that a try. Are they small enough to not have to cut up? or are they like filets??

Trev~

I'm telling you......gotta get them on Spectrum H2O Wafers, great nutrition, and my rays go NUT'S for these things!!

It can't be the only thing that you feed them, but a great supplement for sure.

I get 5lb bucket for $49.99

smelt is whole fish i break in half so they will sink u have to pop the swim bladder

MBU is talking about "New Life Spectrum" brand wafers They use top quality ingredients in their food but I sometimes have a hard time getting fish to accept them since they are harder than massivore or sinking carnivore

Trev :swear:

I am the head chef at a waterfront seafood place I can order anything you need, or at the very least you could have been using our discount at the gfs store this whole time.

If you want to shoot me info on exactly what size and type of products you use I can look up some prices for you. Mainly just need the U number and type of the shrimp and the gram size of the smelt.

Plus if you get it from me you can bring the Mrs. out to eat at the same time and everyone will be happy ;)

Great thanks guys im going to try and find some asian markets. I checked a ton of seafood markets but they are all about the same price.

The best prices i found are are from resturant wholesale places but my neighbor who is a cook lost a good connection and now im back to GFS.

Hey john, wht resturant u work at? U guys go to resturant depot in troy? They have great prices but u have to own a business.

I have 7 adult rays and its costing about 100 every two weeks

Hey todd, hit me a link to the pellets u are talking about. I deff need to give them a try

Aldi.

$4.50/ lb for shrimp
$3/lb for Talapia
$5/lb salmon

Scallops are $6-8 /lb random grocery stores.

I'm feeding around the same 2lb per day. Making the homemade food seems to be more efficient. Seems to fill them up faster. Wrecks the water, but if your filtrations up to snuff it's no biggie. I use a bunch of stuff in it..... Fishdog suggested some greens like spinage and some other crazy stuff so been using that, tossin lottts of flake food in there. Pellets of misc kinds, salmon, talapia, shrimp, scallops, whatever works. Usually use the homemade stuff 2-3 times a week and off days are 50/50 shrimp and some sort of fish.

Seems most of the smaller chain type grocery stores will deal if you talk to the right guy. Explain what you need a month and they can get you odd stuff too if they know you'll be takin it. Fairway and Hyvee are examples, not sure if you got them out there, but if not likely there's something similar. Aldi is a walmart type cheap grocery store. Hard to beat them on shrimp.

Smelt I can't even get here anymore.
