personally i have several glofish in my community tank..i like them just because it throws in some random vibrant colors on the top level of the tank...even though one of my pink ones has scoliosis lol

i really don't like it... but if you do thats your opinion...
i don't like it when genetic manipulation comes into a sentence...
but maybe its a nice way for the kids to start with fishkeeping..

Edit: Something else to think about. It may not be cruel to the fish, but what about the donor jellyfish? I'm sure they aren't treated too well...

I don't think it was too bad, just a dna extraction, which should have been harmless, unless they were torn apart to reach certain cells.

I think Glofish are illegal here, so I can't really say I like their look, but I have seen what I think is a dyed zebra danio, and it looked HORRIBLE, I hate even thinking about how horrible those dyes are.

I think Glofish are perfectly fine. They don't even know their different. Everything is exactly the same between them and a regular zebra danio except for 1 gene.

genetic manipulation...isn't it the same when you have an african american father/mother, and a caucasian mother/father---and they have children that come out to be mixed...
it is technically the same thing...your mixing the main gene pool of a zebra danio...with the main gene pool of a jellyfish...
mixed children....=....odd colored danios..

lol dumb metaphor..

I bought a couple glo fish for a 14g tank I have at work. I bought 6, 2red 2yellow 2orange. And before long one of the orange fish was taking bites out of the others. in about a week he killed them all. I wasn't satisfied, and thought it couldn't be him; so I bought some guppies. I watched him chase the guppies until he caught them and killed them. Didn't take long either just overnight. There is definitely something wrong with this guys jeans:ROFL:

Glofish create other glofish when they breed, so the genes pass on. They could have used 4 different jellyfish and be done with it. As for the possibility of the jellyfish not being treated well, I believe Jellyfish are more closely related to hydra and aiptasia than they are fish, and I don't think they have a nervous system beyond sensing touch and no touch.

You are thinking of painted glass fish.
I think you are right, now that you meantion it. I don't pay THAT much attention to feeders.:)

Thats interesting. Didn't know that about jellyfish. I wonder if the color of glofish would get weaker with each generation?

I see nothing wrong in hybridization and gene injection, but I just don't like Glofish. To be honest, I believe, they are a ploy to get people into the hobby who shouldn't really be into the hobby. I can assure you the vast majority of Glofish's customers are children, and few children, especially those that are attracted to the hobby by the color of Glofish and nothing else, are capable of maintaining a fish tank without any decline in interest over time. For these children, their Glofish become a burden--and when fish become burdens, they are often abused.

Of course, there are people, for example Eupterus, who keep Glofish, despite their, in my opinion, freakishly inorganic looks, and do not abuse them. But I doubt these people are common.

there is nothing wrong with them. in fact i support research in genetics. scientists use the glow gene from jellyfish to check if the desired genes would pass on successfully in their project. scientist are in fact using these methods to find the cure for cancer. in japan ,scientist are using gentic altered silk worms to produce other proteins for medications. so instead of silk you get an indregient for medication.

i perfer that conservation though was focused on instead of making more manmade fish. i may want to keep them but there more interesting fish from nature out there.

I voted for unethical...but that was in regards to the ones they dye...if they want to mess with embryos and create whatever they want...fine by me as long as it doesnt hurt the animal, or the environment.
