How long could and oscar stay in a 55?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To a point, yes, any tank we put fish in is going to be much smaller than they would experience in the wild but the fish should still have enough room to grow to its potential, and a 55 isnt enough for an Oscar IMO. It's not just about "living". Put the same potentially 16" fish in a 125 and it'll easily grow large and live long. It's personal preference and plenty of folks keep Oscars in 55's. It can be done and "is" done. It's just not my recommendation. I prefer space.

Well said

I guess my problem is ive never seen an oscar larger than 12 inches in real life. The biggest one ive seen on youtube was around 16 or 17 inches and it was in like a 250 with a bunch of other fish

I've seen some 14 inchers and I must say, they are much bigger in person than on a screen. I just can't imagine having an oscar of that size in a 55, it wouldn't seem right at all.

I'm probably getting a 210 and I may have room in it so an extra upgrade just for the oscar may not even be needed making the possibility of me getting an oscar much more realistic :D

last post shows what I want my the stock to be, but I think it may be a little too much
this thread shows how my stocking plan and tank size has changed throughout the last month or so lol
Well if your getting a 210 i would go for something like this

Thats one of my favorite tanks ever i really like the oscar fire eel combo

ehhh I'd want more color in the tank. It's a very nice tank, it just doesnt have any fish (other than the oscars) that truly stick out

well if your looking for color a green terror would be cool to throw in ther but the aggression really vairys so you might end up with problems down the road

For the stock I want I don't need any more color.... got that covered with 2 severums, clown loaches and a green phantom and oscar (possibly)

The good thing is that you already realize that an Oscar shouldn't be housed for life in a 55. That topic gets argued and beat to death around here. If you have plans to have a 210 up and running in the near future, you can get an Oscar now at let it growout. Tank size, diet, regular water changes are all important with keeping cichlids. We may not be able to duplicate the humongous sizes of rivers and lakes but we still can supply the fish that we choose to keep with a healthy amount of space. I think your future 210 will be great for your mentioned stock.
