Newer to rays and have some marbled motoros we are enjoying thoroughly.

With the newer discussion about the 'miniature' or smaller then normal marbled motoros, are there any similar black rays?

How big do black diamonds tend to get? I know there are plenty of female regular leos in the 22"+ range, just curious if the black diamonds get to similar sizing.

P14s tend to be a little smaller right?

Our tank size is a 520 gallon (96" x 42") so sizing is not a huge deal just more of a curious post then anything.

i had a pair give birth recently of the smaller marbles and the father is 12" and mom is 13".dont expect them to grow any longer.
my largest bd is a 16" female and she hasnt bred yet so i expect she is still growing. the male is mature and knocking up regular leos and he's 15".
i had p14 give birth recently and the mothers are 15-16" and 2 males are around 14" and mature.
you tank footprint is great for rays! welcome to the addiction!

Thanks!

I really wanted to go 48" in width but no way to fit it so had to settle for 42". Should work out OK.

This is intresting.....

I always thought black rays got huge. After seein pics of some of Mike's 30+"ers and pics of Rudy's monster I just assumed they all got massive. Maybe P14s and BDs are different, but don't BDs and classic Leos mature at roughly the same sizes, which is also similar to Henleis? Making it possible to hit the same max sizes?

I too was always under the impression the black rays got huge and a big part of why I posted this thread. With the new 'mini' marbled info I was wondering if there was any similar things occuring in other rays species commonly kept.

I personally feel there are too many variables on why some captive rays are so much bigger than others. I believe the biggest is how the ray was cared for from birth.

this is my experience. i am sure they get much larger. i have seen 24" leo's that are just massive. p14's on the other hand are spose to stay smaller and i believe they max out around 20"?

there's too much to factor in. go by the max size and hope it's smaller :P haha
genetics, lineage, specie capture location/food sources, etc will all determine the size of a ray.
if it had less to eat in the wild, it would be smaller than one who was able to gorge. it's also similar how people are not all the same size, even within families or race. we all have individual genetic differences.

if you look at rays caught in different locations, they sometimes show massive variation in size. there are orbs caught in areas that are massive, 24+ inches. then you have orbs in other spots that max out around 15 inches.

it's luck of the draw on the size you get, really. the average species size is a good indicator of what to expect, if you get larger or smaller, you won't know till it matures.

So does this mean a properly cared for Hystrix will get bigger then an improperly cared for Motoro?

Care to elaborate cause basing max size on care sounds kinda silly to me......
