Can a 9 inch bichir eat a 4 inch oscar? I have the oscar and i know someone that wants to get rid of their bichir...not sure if this is a good idea....

what type of bichir? if its a senegal its perfectly safe and oscar can grow much faster. bichir generally only try to eat anything that it can safely swallow whole, but some more aggressive types will sometimes try bigger fish and try to swallow it (exp. ornati & endli)

I just put a 3 to 4 inch oscar in with my 8 to 9 inch ornate and del and there has been no problems so far. Its only been a few weeks. But I have never seen the any agression from the bichirs. May be worth a try.

i am not actually sure what type. it is a friend of a friend and i am in the process of verifying this info. I assumed the behavior would be very similar for all types of bichirs.

ejwp,

how big is your tank?

the type of species matters as some specially lower jaws have much bigger mouths comparative to its size and are generally more aggressive in trying to test if it can swallow a certain fish, specially if its in the borderline between yes and not.

but generally they are peaceful if they judge its impossible to swallow, they bite if they think their is a possibility they can eat it.
