My Male Festae Progression Thread-From Egg to Today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You know what... that is why I sold my Dovii a few days ago. I knew I could not house him... unless I got rid of all my other fish and even then a 265 seems tough for a full size Dovii, lol. He had lots of blue on the fins (Costa Rican)... I really liked him, but had to do what was right. Later and thanks again for the thead.

I think it's in the best interest of the fish.

Awesome thread man. I've thought about doing something like this with a couple of my favorites as well. Maybe in a few more months I will :)

Ok sounds good. I'll be watching for it...I like progression threads. :)

I always love seeing updates on your festae Balton. I'm currently growing out 15 of Umbeekings festae right now, and even with how awesome the genes these fri come from are, I can only hope to have a few turn out as nice as your pair. I don't mind telling you, I'm very jealous. Thanks for putting the effort into the progression thread. I'll be revisiting it allot in the future, I'm sure:)

Thanks again!
Rob

Wow Rob thanks a lot man. I'm sure yours will turn out beautiful too.

absolutely fantasic Balton:) great progression thread, its really nice to see how things went down for you plus track the family tree. great job witht the thread, im looking forward to progressions to your other fish now;)

Oops, I almost forgot your post. I appreciate it.

I'm glad I was able to put this thread together too, maybe we'll see some others making something similar...I'd like that. I'll keep adding some updated photos and any info that might come in handy for others.

Thanks again everyone, you guys and gals are great.

With the dovii and festae together were you scared of possible hybrids? would have
kept the fry if they had bred? My male dovii always tries with a female Midas we have and
our female red flowerhorn, a big boy like that i would be scared. My dovii is 10'' yours is huge,

I do have a question though, originally i believe i read your female was a F1 correct?
so when you have bred her to this WC male, what do you end up with as your fry?
What are they considered? F2 or F3? And what could you expect from the second round of these guys

I don't know what they would be considered by the book, but most likely F2 since at least one of the parents was F1 you probably have to move up one. If I were to sell them, I would personally describe them as F0 x F1 fry.

As far as the Dovii and Festae breeding, I'm wasn't worried about two males breeding together. If they did breed, then I would start to worry. ;)

On a side note, is that your and your fish/fishtank in your avatar?

oh no, its a black pacu and red pacu youngster we caught a photo with at the shark reef in vegas,
Overall thanks for getting back, I do have some last questions:
What would you expect from you fry as you raise them?
Do you think they will end up just as beautiful are your adults?
You have the most amazing adults ive seen, I would be amazing if they ended up just like their parents, I really hope they do..Myself I've started raising a F1 Equador female Festae shes around 5inches now, ive had since a young fry,
And man i hope she ends up just as brilliant as yours,
Best of luck,
Hands down the best and most stable adults ive ever seen, Good job

They would be F1 outcrossed.

Okay, so it was a term that was trying to catch on a few years ago when you crossed an F series back to a wild fish. It never did though. I suppose we could say F1.5?

Your fish are so amazing you've inspired me. I plan on having a massive south american tank and I'm pretty torn between a festae pair or peacock bass as the center pieces of the tank. Amazing fish you have there.

Thank you very much. It's always nice when someone tells me my Festae inspired them. I've dedicated many hours of my time taking care of these two. I love to sit and watch them interact with one another. :):)

How long did it take you to sex your festea? What is the easiest way to determine? I just got my first 3 a few months ago

About 5"+ or so before I could really figure it out. He was kind of tricky for a while because he was always striped up with a dark black dorsal fin. How big are yours?
