Alright MFK, who has some truth on feeder fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed feeders all the time to my managuense and dovi. In 3 years I got ich one time, so the threat of disease is not something I worry about.

If you get such a kick out of watching your fish eat feeders then why worry about the slight potential hazard? Me I never seen the attraction-- small fish running from large with no where to go because in an enclosed box ---big deal. I always use pellets because I hate dealing with chemicals and screwing up my water chemistry. Mostly nothing will probally happen but not worth the risk to me but to each his own.

the truth is unless you raise the feeders yourself ..... there is a good 99% chance that they are sickly....and will introduce it to your fish and tank... they may not succumb from it right away.. it could even take years depending on the infestation and how healthy your fish is in general..but sooner or later it will die.. and most people will wonder why.... plus there is very small amount of nutritional element to feeder fish... best to feed pellets with everything packed in..

I feed my baby peacocks feeders till they are big enough to eat earthworms.

My largest peacocks love earthworms so i stick with them, They eat feeders every once in a while but i don't see how they can die from feeders, I mean they eat live food in the wild and they are not snacking on pellets. Personally feeding pellets takes their hunting aspect out of there system i mean i watched videos of how they smash the top of the water getting pellets but when i dump about 5 dozen feeders in there gone within a few minutes is just cool to watch how they would work in the wild.

Don't get me wrong i know about all the diseases and parasites they carry but i trust my LFS in keeping there feeders healthy as they feed their own fish in the store those feeders they sell. I have also bought from a bait shop minnows and they are a better quality feeder because goldfish pretty much die during transportation.

consider your fish lucky so far... trusting an LFS store is a big gamble.. if they are lucky enough to buy feeders from a very reliable wholesale dealer all will be well..but they usually buy from a few dealers and sooner or later.. anyway lets just say your lucky for now.

yes.. if you are collecting earthworms from a area that uses pestisides, insectisides etc .. then very bad.. if you are buying from a person who raises earth worms or you are raising yourself then they are good..and lots of nutrition

Everybody I know whose fish got ick from feeders, keeps a constant supply of feeders in their tanks.

Everytime my tanks get ick, it's from old fish beating up brand new fish.

I would rather my fish not live to be 20, but be able to eat live foods. A lot of customers who feed their piscavore fish strictly pellet/frozen food diets that trade their fish into our store have very weird fish who tend to sulk 90% of the time and do not act personable.
