How Does American Cuisine Stack Up Against Other Countries?

Thai food, true chinese, italian and good ol' british food > american "cuisine".
As for mashed potatoes originating in america, I think you'll find it's Ireland.
Could be wrong though.

Not sure about original "American" food but I dont really eat "american" styled food.... maybe a little but I dont think its that great. If I had to cook something Id probably do a crock potted pot roast with onion and potatoes or something (and its probably not american, but my mom used to make it for me.) Otherwise expect Asian, Italian, Cajun or "Island" styled food from me for the most part (they are what I eat and like, so it is what I cook =] or attempt to).

"AMERICAN" cuisine. By that you mean U.S.A? I been to New York, L.A, vegas etc for vacation and can say i was not impressed with the taste of any of the food i ate there ( excluding B.B.Q ) what i will say is your portion sizes are crazy. But i did find somethings i've never seen anywhere else in the world and that would be alot of the menu at the Heart Attack Cafe, I mean Deep fried butter, choc bacon and deep fried Oreo's. So you could say that is some "modern" U.S cuisine. But i tell you one thing Australia and the U.S are probably in the same boat when it comes to cuisine, We both are so heavily influenced from other cultures that there is very little knowledge of our own foods.

i think mashed potatoes are a true american invented food unless i'm wrong

maybe you can google that while you're at it?

potatoes come from south america so i bet they were the first people to cook, smash and eat a potato.

Yes, but simply cooking food over a fire is not BBQ, it is grilling. BBQ is slowely cooking meat, which probably wasn't first done in the US either. But, to me, BBQ is American because we perfected it by using different rubs and sauces and techniques. Different regions of the US have different types of BBQ. No one else in the world does BBQ like Americans. It is an American cuisine:).

it's been likened to curry. different spins on the same basic stuff.

it's the combination of spices and smoke that are used that make american bbq what it is. all american bbq uses the same base spices and some type of smoke but in different quantities and with additional spices. settlers brought the spices to america and native americans taught them how to smoke the meat, put that together and you get the birth of american bbq!

there were a bunch of native american recipes too that i found and they sound really good! i was shocked at how many different things there were and how little of the ingredients i've actually eaten before (and i'm a pretty adventurous eater). now i gotta find a native american restaurant! :naughty:

I'm not sure if it's truly an "American" Cuisine, but when I have friends in from out of town I always try to make it a point to have a crawfish boil. I have lived across the U.S. and had crawfish from everywhere I've lived and it always tastes unsavory unless it is fresh and prepared correctly.

I'm sure other countries eat crawfish, but it doesn't taste like it does where I live. lol

BBQ is classic American, and some of the best eating IMO. Nothing like biting into a slow cooked/smoked slab of spareribs, or another big hunk of pork. The two things we do right in this country:
