Paratheraps syn size and sex

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Anyone know how big vieja synspilum get and if you can sex them at 4''? I beleive they are now paratheraps, or are they considered vieja still?

As far as I know, they are Vieja. As for sexing, I have yet to find out a significant way of sexing any of the Vieja. I have all of the Vieja's and they are about 6", and I cant find any differences that will lead me to make a good determination.

Thanks. Do you know the true size of a full grown adult? I have seen on the web anywhere from 9''-17'' TL.

Here is a pic. The shredded tail is from some red bay snooks at the LFS. This guy/girl is in a much more peaceful place now :)

The only way to be 100% sure is to vent. 12" is normally average for synspilus..

:iagree: Thats what I would say. I dont think that I have ever seen an Argentea, Blackbelt, Synsphilus, Regani, over 12".

Vent is the only way. I am switching all my Vieja and Paratheraps to a larger tank, and as I catch them I am going to vent them. Cause I have no idea.

That is a nice looking Syns.

Good luck.

i have personally owned a 14" male(took 3 years to get that size) from my experience most males have more of a square shaped head and females have a more torpedo shape(not 100% though)and the male top and bottom fins ate usually more pointed and the female are kinda rounded.
when i get home from work i will post pics of my males and females(easier to tell the difference side by side,a little more difficult with single fish)

Males tend to get a hump on their heads, be more colorful, longer fin extensions, and act like males :)

It takes them awhile to mature but like Buddha says, they can get every bit of 14" (or bigger) given the right conditions / time.

P. synspilum is now considered a junior synonym of P. melanurus...so they scientists now call them P. melanurus.

McMahan, Caleb D.; 2011; "Paraneetroplus synspilus is a junior synonym of Paraneetroplus melanurus (Teleostei: Cichlidae)"; Zootaxa; (n. 2833), pp. 1-14 (crc03297)

Here's the abstract of the paper (from Cichlid Room Companion): http://www.cichlidae.com/library/abstract.php?id=3297

Thanks for all the info everyone :) I am hoping this fish will heal, and get to its full potential. I have had this fish for a day and the colors are already getting better.
